We asked manufacturer PR representatives at various locations, including individual manufacturer exhibitions, collective trade shows, and snow test ride events, about the new models and hot topics that are attracting attention for the 2023-24 season
This time, we spoke to REXXAM, a Japanese boot brand famous for being used by mogul skiers Horishima Yukimasa and Uemura Aiko in competitions around the world, at the SNOW SPORTS Joint Exhibition (held from February 14th at Pacifico Yokohama)
The design and color have been updated for the 2023-2024 season!
One of the major changes for the 2023-2024 season is the change in color and design. The R-EVO will be changing color from last year's passion orange to a fiery red, and the XX-related freestyle models will have a black design like this. Incidentally, the XX-LIMITED was developed in collaboration with Yukimasa Horishima. Apparently, the black color was a strong request from Horishima
The interior has changed a lot!
The 2023-2024 season will be a year with many changes to the inner lining. Until last season, the R-EVO-M was equipped with an H (hard) liner, but for the 2023-2024 season it will be equipped with the same "H22" liner as the R-EVO-S. The R-EVO PLUS, with its stiff flex models of 110 and 120, will use the liner that was included in last year's R-EVO-M last. Softer boots with a flex of 100 or less, including the XX series, will be equipped with newly developed softer liner called "S liner" and "SS liner."
In particular, the "SS Inner" previously had a sewn-on tongue, but this season the tongue is now removable to improve the fit, and the ankle position can now be adjusted, further improving the fit
Key points to consider when choosing boots: R-EVO and R-EVO PLUS
This was explained to me by Yukikata-san, who was my attendant at the REXXAM booth at the exhibition
"Everyone chooses their boots differently. Some competitors are strict about choosing boots with technical goals in mind, while others just want to enjoy a day of leisurely fun. I would like everyone to take the time to choose boots that match their own skiing style and inclinations, and to choose boots that suit their purpose
For example, if you compare the R-EVO and R-EVO PLUS, you can see that the R-EVO's contact surface on the bottom of your foot is densely textured, making it extremely rigid. On the other hand, the R-EVO PLUS has an intentionally textured structure with many gaps. The rigidity is completely different when compared
The sole of the foot is fundamentally important when it comes to boot performance, so the harder the sole, the more solid and hard you can ski, whether it's freeriding or alpine skiing. From this, I think you could say that the concept is that the R-EVO is for people who want to ski hard, and the R-EVO PLUS is for people who just enjoy skiing. I think that people who want to ski all day from morning until evening will find the PLUS more comfortable
Furthermore, it is important to have an inner boot that matches the shape of your sole. Even among R-EVO PLUS users, those who prefer a flex such as 120 want a certain level of slippage, so they can choose a slightly harder inner boot
The good thing about REXXAM is that it's manufactured domestically, so you can purchase just the innerwear. Overseas brands are imported with the innerwear already assembled, which is inflexible, but REXXAM allows you to customize the innerwear as you like. If you pre-order early, you can have the innerwear replaced with an upgraded version for an additional few thousand yen.
