Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field ['25-26]

Introducing recommended courses, weather forecasts, live cameras, and course maps for Hakuba Iwatake Snowfield

INDEX

What is Hakuba Iwatake Snowfield (Nagano Prefecture) like?

favorite among Hakuba locals

Iwatake is sandwiched between Happo and Tsugaike and tends to get a little less attention, but it's actually one of the top slopes for Hakuba locals who secretly frequent it. The main reasons for this are that it has the perfect terrain for freeriding, it's the only slope in the Hakuba area that leads down to the Northern Alps, and the powder snow is hard to beat

What makes Iwatake so appealing is the slope design that preserves the natural terrain. Large bowls, undulating ridges, and streams are ungroomed, and after a fresh snowfall they become the best powder areas. The number of ungroomed courses has been increasing year by year, and now there are seven courses. You can also have fun hitting the walls on the long courses that run from the summit to the base of the mountain

Iwatake has a wide range of courses that can be enjoyed whether there is snow or not. If you don't know about it or don't go, you'll be missing out

Recommended courses at Hakuba Iwatake Snowfield

・HIKAGE A

Maximum gradient: 30 degrees, average gradient: 15 degrees / Distance: Approximately 520m / Slope orientation: West

This stream-like terrain is located right in the middle of the ski resort. Because it is less affected by wind, snow tends to accumulate on the course. At first, the slope is gentle, but it gets steeper as you approach the bottom of the stream

・VIEW A・B

VIEW A
Maximum slope: 24 degrees Average: 19 degrees / Distance: 830m / Slope orientation: East
VIEW B
Maximum slope: 32 degrees Average: 14 degrees / Distance: 720m / Slope orientation: East

IWATAKE BACK BOWL, where the courses are located, is the only area in HAKUBA VALLEY where you can ski down towards the Northern Alps. The views are not to mention spectacular. There are courses for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers. Views C and D involve skiing down the groomed slopes by hitting the walls beside the courses, while Views A and B are ungroomed slopes

View A in particular is a hard course with rugged terrain and exposed valleys. However, when fresh snow accumulates, it's fun to jump with just a little trigger and connect turns along the terrain. View B is a single slope from the start. When there is fresh snow, you can pick up speed and make big turns

・DANGAN

Maximum gradient: 35 degrees, average gradient: 27 degrees / Distance: Approximately 890m / Slope orientation: East

This is a long course with a steep slope. The start on Skier's Left is not groomed, so there are many small undulations. After passing the lift that crosses the course and going about 100m, the slope changes. From this point, there is a section where the terrain is visible on Skier's Right, and it is interesting to trace this. The final part of the course becomes steeper towards Skier's Right, so the key is to control your speed as you connect from the top
