The Ranger series is in its second season with major changes | Reasons why each model has easy-to-handle characteristics

With freeride at the core of the concept, the lineup has been completely redesigned to make it easier to choose depending on your skiing style and field. There are six different models available depending on waist width: 116, 108, 102, 96, 90, and 84mm, and you can see that the Ranger covers almost all situations.

The feature that greatly characterizes this Ranger series is the ``Shaped TI.''
Insert titanium sheets cut into different widths, lengths, and cut angles for each model. The wider the ski, the shorter the seat that is laid out around the center, and the narrower the ski, the longer the seat extends from front to back. The longer the titanium sheet, the more effective it is at suppressing the top and tail, so skis with a waist of 100 mm or less provide stability when skiing on compacted snow slopes, while skis with a width of 102 mm or more can be moved to the middle to accommodate skiing on any slope. .

In addition, the center part has a ``flex cut'' cut in the seat.
The wider the ski, the deeper and wider the ski, and the narrower the ski, the narrower and smaller the ski. This cut adjusts the stiffness of flex and torsion, and when you touch the ski, it's obvious that the wider the ski, the softer it feels, and the narrower the ski, the faster the response and feel more stable underfoot.

Thanks to the exquisite layout of titanium, which maintains buoyancy and lightness while maintaining a sense of stability when gliding, this series has an all-mountain lineup that can be enjoyed actively.
So, I would like to hear from two people: a freeride skier who has been using the Ranger for many years, and a basic skier who has been using the Ranger for two years, and explore the appeal of the Ranger.

I want to enjoy the mountains more with the ranger | I have been using Mirai Kuriyama's case for 2 years

Mirai Kuriyama

Born in 1985, from Toyama Prefecture. He started skiing at the age of 3 and participated in the Inter-High and National Athletic Meets as a junior. After that, he switched to basic skiing. Although he is small in stature, he is fast, and with his big, crisp gliding as his weapon, he has won the All-Japan Technical Championship four times. He is currently working as the head instructor of GALA Ski & Snowboard School and representative of GALA Kids School.

"I want to carry my skis, climb mountains, and ski through the great outdoors."

Mirai Kuriyama, who started using the Ranger with the 2021-22 model, said that's how she felt the moment she held it in her hands.
Having won the overall championship in the ski technique competition four times, she is undoubtedly one of the top players in the basic skiing world. She also had an image of her ranger being able to freely slide and fly across vast mountains, enjoying skiing as she pleased. She thought it was a ski she would like to ride someday, and she got the ``Ranger 102 (163cm)'' ('21-22 model) in bright pink.

Kuriyama usually skis based at Gala Yuzawa. When fresh snow accumulates in areas with heavy snowfall, Ranger 102 comes into play. The level of satisfaction is skyrocketing due to the high level of performance that allows you to ski freely regardless of the quality of the snow or whether it is compacted or uncompacted snow.

'21-22 model Ranger 102 attracted by the color

``I was drawn to the color of the Ranger 102. Just imagining the pink color against the white snowy mountains made my heart race. The color is vibrant even in the dark, so I get excited even when I'm skating. It's short at 163 cm
. This is mainly because I often use it at Gala Yuzawa. In Echigo Yuzawa, the snow is deep and a little heavy.Furthermore, there are many courses with short distances.Among them, if you want to enjoy it all day long, you can ski quickly in deep snow or on piste, and the course is I thought that even on rough and trodden slopes, you could have the most fun with just these skis.I started with the color, then decided on the length and width.''

Kuriyama says. Compared to the racing skis I use regularly, the Ranger 102's waist width is 2 to 3 cm wider. I also asked him about his feelings about it.

“Although the difference in waist width is quite large, the strength of the ski and the feeling of cutting through the snow are unique to Fischer, and are very similar. The waist width is wider than the skis I usually ride, so the ski moves with my body
. It feels like you are moving while floating. The ski runs vertically, giving you an exhilarating feeling.Racing skis have the image of cutting while
diving, but the Ranger 102 cuts while floating.
The more you notice the difference in snow quality, such as when carving on a hard, compacted snow slope or deep powder, the more you will notice the difference. However, both have a sense of stability and solid footing. It's a ski with very good balance and suitable for each situation. I rediscovered how much slippery it can be if you change your skis to suit the snow quality and situation, which is also interesting.''

Kuriyama's enjoyment of skiing has expanded, and for the past two years he has been going to Tateyama skiing every spring. Carrying skis on your shoulders for long periods of time, walking with skins on, and skiing down natural slopes at will is a completely different feeling than skiing on a ski resort, and it feels refreshing and refreshing. On the mountain, where there is no control, you have to think about which slope you are going to ski, what route you should take to get there, the line you are going to ski, what speed you should run, and what you should do if there is any risk. It's a different sense of accomplishment than skiing at a ski resort.

In the spring of 2023, I skied Mt. Tateyama in a fully remodeled Ranger.

``When I go to the mountains and face nature, all my small worries seem to melt away. The moment I fall in love with nature, I feel like I don't know if I want to try it or not.I want to enjoy the mountains even more with the rangers.''

The performance of compacted snow slopes improves year by year, making skiing more enjoyable | 10 years of experience as a ranger. Kazushige Sekiya's case

Kazushige Sekiya

Born in Obuse City, Nagano Prefecture in 1980. He devoted himself to competitive skiing until high school, and after graduating, he was drawn to the freeski movement and studied abroad in Colorado, USA, where he entered the world of freeskiing. Currently, he runs the private guide service ``SKINAGANO'' for inbound tourists based in Kijimadaira Village, Northern Shinshu, and works hard to participate in free ride competitions and take photos. https://www.goskinagano.com

Kazushige Sekiya has been using the Ranger for 10 years, even before the model change. In the new "Ranger" series, he uses three types, 116 (187cm), 108 (185cm), and 102 (176cm), depending on the situation.

``The 116 is mainly used for deep snow and tree runs in resorts, and the 108 is mainly used for BC, regardless of the snow quality, whether it's powder, ice burn, or gritty snow. The 102 is often used in resorts and is the most fun ski on compacted snow slopes. hey"

What is Sekiya's impression of the Ranger, which has been oriented toward freeride since the days when the two lineups of directional TI and twin-tip FR were mixed? We asked them to talk about 116, who felt a particularly big change.

Photo/ Horoya Nakata

``The 116 has a very good balance of size, ski width, flex, and torsion, allowing you to ski smoothly even in deep powder. The ski flexes nicely, so you can make turns with a good rhythm of sinking and floating when making small turns.Large turns Then, while maintaining speed, turn while drawing an accurate arc.In stream terrain, you can pull the turn to heights that you could not reach before, and you can keep the speed and hit it.The biggest appeal of the full model change
is Improved maneuverability. The trigger for turns is smoother, making it easier to introduce the most difficult turns in skiing, and starting turns with ease. Even though the twin tip has a waist width of 116 mm, I felt it when I was able to carve on a slope of compacted snow without feeling any discomfort.I don't have any problems even when I slide on a switch.''

The ski's waist width of 116mm provides comfortable gliding performance in deep snow, and the fact that it is not limited to any situation is proof of its high performance. Let's dig a little deeper into the feeling outside of powder.

Photo/ Horoya Nakata

"It's also strong at speed, and even when making long turns at high speed on level ground, the skis didn't flutter at all. The radius is 20m, so you can only carve around long turns. However, the next turn, which is common to the Ranger series, Long turns are comfortable because it is easy to enter. The footwell is 116mm, so there is no quick response. In that respect, I think you can feel the weight a little.Even on rough slopes when there is no snowfall
. It's a similar feeling. Especially if the snow is soft, you can handle it without any major problems. The 116 has the most curved nose and tail of the series, and its soft flex means that it won't shift even in loose snow and rough conditions. It's easy to drift, and the running performance is probably high. However, there is a lot of impact from unevenness, so there is no doubt that the thickness of the ski will pick up the behavior easily. On hard slopes, 108 and 102 should be able to handle it safely. Into the air The movement when jumping out depends on the mounting position of the binding. If you are 180cm and mount it 1cm ahead of the manufacturer's recommended position, it will be easier to perform spin tricks. If you are thinking about the line centered on air based on tricks, 108 and 102 are recommended.

What kind of impression did you get from BC, which involved walking?

Photo/Yuji Kaneko

``The 116 has the smallest titanium sheet in the series, weighing 2150g per leg. It's not that heavy considering its thickness, and even when hiking, it doesn't feel heavy.
When attaching the skin, all Ranger series have a skin hook support on the tail, making it difficult for the hook to come off while walking. I tend to drive a lot of speed in powder, but no matter how fast I went, I never felt scared. The flex is soft, making it easy to adapt to uneven terrain. It has the maneuverability and stability to handle everything from tight tree-run turns in deep snow to high-speed big turns on open slopes. It’s easy to shift and drift.”

Sekiya says that his powder skiing skills have definitely improved by continuing to ride the Ranger Series. Especially since I became a new Ranger, I have been able to hit the ``rips'' of stream terrain that I couldn't reach due to lack of speed, and I can turn at high speed on slopes that were too deep to reach speed. The performance of the skis often helps. The Ranger is now indispensable to Sekiya's riding, which has achieved good results in freeride competitions and is sure to capture images in photography.
