Rusutsu Resort | Hokkaido

The number of courses and the total running distance are No. 1 in Hokkaido!
Overwhelming scale and quality

Even though Hokkaido is vast, there is no place where you can ski as long as Rusutsu.

Rusutsu has 37 courses laid out on the three mountain slopes of West, East, and Isola, each of which is very long. If you connect them, the total running distance is actually 42km! It is said that it will also be The distance from Sapporo to Otaru is 39km, so when you think that you will reach Otaru while skating all the courses in Rusutsu, you will be amazed at the scale. The total number of courses and the total running distance boasts Hokkaido's number one. Of course, the quality of snow in Hokkaido is JAPOW (Japan powder).

On the contrary, since Rusutsu is located inland, the snow is remarkably dry. And it rains a lot. Moreover, the number of people is relatively small compared to the size of the slopes, so there are few intense competition for powder. If we imagine that there will be almost no inbound skiers and snowboarders in the 2020-21 season, the aim is to have an even bigger chance to fully enjoy the blissful powder snow.

You can do everything you want powder, grooming, long tree

THE Perfect mountains.

There are 37 courses that cover all possible situations. In Rusutsu, there are ski slopes, side country in unmanaged ski areas, parks that make use of unique natural topography (closed in the 2020-21 season), grooming fields that are said to be too beautiful, and even top skiers. It's a perfect mountain where all kinds of skiing can be realized, such as long courses that make your knees laugh, and even night skiing.

As you can see from the ski resort map, the course slopes in Rusutsu vary in different directions, so the snow conditions vary depending on the direction of the slopes, the amount of snowfall at that time, the direction of the wind, and the direction of the sun. In other words, there are many options to choose a good place and ski.

On sunny days, you can see the magnificent scenery of Lake Toya and Mt. It is not just skiing that is satisfying, but a mountain where you can feel that your heart is satisfied by being surrounded by nature.

West Mt. [West] | East Mt. [East] | Mt.Isola [Isola ]

A quick explanation of the three mountains

Each of the three mountains that make up Rusutsu has its own unique flavor.

The whole picture is as shown on this slope map. West Mt. [West] | East Mt. [East] | Mt.Isola [Isola], let's know the outline of each. West Mt. [Waist] located in the back right behind Mt. Yotei, is somewhat compact in size.

However, it attracts families to freestylers skating down side country parks. Access is easy in front of the hotel, and you can enjoy night skiing without feeling cold. East Mt. [East] which connects with Mt. Isola, features a long course.

The East Vivaldi Course, which stretches for 2,300m from the summit, and the East Tigne Course, which follows the ridgeline and has a good view, are long and moderate slopes that are very slippery. In addition, there is a slope of 40 degrees, which is the steepest slope in Rusutsu, just below the summit, and it is a perfect score. Mt.Isola is where skiers who are proud of their skills gather . Starting with the 3,500m Isola Grand Course, the longest in Rusutsu, its sense of scale and abundance of course variety make it one of the three mountains. Topographically, it has multiple swamps, and you can clearly see that there are many advanced courses. Powder tends to accumulate on the course that falls into the stream, so it is very popular with powder lovers. Rusutsu's specialty points are also here!

3 points to fully enjoy Rusutsu on this scale

With the scale up to this point, it seems that the day will be over just by going to the site and checking the location. Here are three ways to enjoy Rusutsu to the fullest.

1. Let the Rusutsu-savvy riders teach you the "best"!

Let's ask riders who are familiar with Rusutsu how they enjoy skating on Rusutsu so that you never miss the "good points"! Where is your favorite powder spot? Which is the best course to satisfy ski pros? I'm curious.

2. Get a sense of the spot and distance you want to ski on the course map!

Rusutsu is wide and long, so check the course profile and recommendations from the STEEP editorial department for "This place will be slippery!" And it is important to check the position and get a sense of the distance on the course map as soon as possible when you go to the site. If you can grasp the sense of distance with your own senses, you must be able to go to a good place before other people.

3. Stay as long as possible!

In order to fully enjoy Rusutsu, which is so vast and varied, a day trip or one night and two days on weekends is definitely not enough! If possible, I would like to stay for 2 nights, 3 nights and 4 days. Rusutsu says that you can enjoy the best stay as much as skiing. If you stay at a hotel with a slope in front of you, you can enjoy the first track in the morning.

Hidemitsu Okada who has skied in Hokkaido for a long time

Hidemitsu Okada, also known as "Hide", was born and raised in Hokkaido, and is a top rider active in the freeride ski scene based in Hokkaido. He has been active in freestyle contests in Japan and overseas, and has since expanded his activities to the backcountry, leaving behind many filmed works and videos. Hide, who was born in Hokkaido and has been skating all his life in Hokkaido, says that Rusutsu Resort is his favorite place. What kind of place do you like?

“This is a ski resort that will definitely satisfy skiers.

“It goes without saying that Rusutsu has good snow quality, but I think it’s a ski resort that can satisfy skiers of all genres. The courses are wide, so the carving on the slopes feels good, and the powder rides on non-compacted snow courses are great. However, I think that there are plenty of gentle slopes that beginners can enjoy. The

beginning of the season and the high season are just the best!!The altitude and latitude are not that high, so the conditions are not stable in the spring. However, it can also be said that it is interesting because it changes.I think that it is a ski resort that will definitely satisfy skiers, so I definitely want you to go.”

My Favorite BEST Course 3

 Super East Course

"The snow is uncompacted and has a steep slope, so it's especially great in the morning when it's snowing!"

<Non-compact snow>
Location: East Mt. [East]
Distance: 500m
Slope average: 32°/ maximum 40°
Level: Superlative

Steamboat Course A

“Because the course width is wide, you can freely draw your favorite turn arc.”

Location: Mt.Isola
Distance
average: 12°/ max. 26°
Level: Intermediate

Heavenly Spirit Course

“Because the terrain is slightly mortar-shaped, and you can ski while doing hits and tricks to the left and right.”

Location: Mt.Isola
Distance
average: 19°/ Maximum 22°
Level: Advanced

my iron plate routine

When I come to Rusutsu, I will: 1. Super East Course → 2. Steamboat Course A → 3. I do almost nothing except skiing in order of the Heavenly Spirit course. Although there are times when you slip into the forest course on the side of the course. (smile)

heavenly canyon

Golden lift that you can enjoy with just one

"I'll teach you the strongest one.
the Isola 3rd Quad Lift."

Is it the "Isola No. 3 Quad Lift" that runs toward the summit of Mt. Isola? I like uncompacted snow, so I often use this lift to cycle the "Heavenly Canyon Course" and "Heavenly Spirit Course". I will show you the fun points on the illustration.

my favorite lunch menu

The recommendation for ski resorts is the "simmered egg omelet rice" at the restaurant "Steamboat". However, I think the pizza in the south wing of the Rusutsu Resort Hotel was delicious. With this, I'm just a pizza lover (laughs).

How delicious! Everyone will surely be satisfied

Recommended courses still available

Let's take a look at some of the recommended courses for freeride enthusiasts that are popular in terms of course profile, such as distance, slope, slope direction, and topography.

The Isola Grand Course where this groom is irresistible

Isola Gran Course

Distance: 3500m / Slope: Maximum 20° ◎ Average 12° / Level: Intermediate / Mt.Isola

too beautiful grooming barn

The compacted snow barn on Mt. Isola, which is called "too beautiful grooming barn" (photo). The careful work by the craftsmen makes me feel pride, it's no longer a work. The pleasure of cutting through this corduroy with high-speed turns is irresistible. "Anyway, the course is long, so you can increase your speed comfortably, so it feels great!"

Indulge in powder on the Across A course

Across A Course

Distance: 300m / Slope: Maximum 33° ◎ Average 29° / Level: Advanced / East Mt.

Fall in Furikozawa on a powder day!

We recommend Coco. The downhill route to the Furikozawa course between Mt.Isola and East Mt. is powder heaven. Above all, this Across A can be turned in the East No. 2 pair list, so you can enjoy deep snow efficiently.

Isola B Course

Distance: 800m / Slope: Maximum 25° ◎ Average 22° / Level: ◆ Advanced / Mt.Isola

If you ride Isola No. 2, you can ski down most efficiently

This is a course that is called a famous place for cobb, and every year a continuous cobline is completed on a single line from the top to Furiko swamp. For mogul skiers, it is exciting as it tests their leg strength. Going down to the base one by one takes too much time. It is also important to ski strategically on the wide slopes.

Being able to practice on such deep bumps is also valuable

sky course

Distance: 500m / Slope Maximum 27° ◎ Average 15° / Level: Advanced / West Mt.

A course where you can enjoy the line of deep bumps on the left side from the West No. 2 Quad lift. The best part is that you can ski even at night. A spot where you can hone your technique even though it is short.

Pick up non-compacted snow courses for each mountain

West Mt.

Sky course < uncompacted snow >

You can also enjoy the line of deep bumps below the West No. 2 Quad Lift landing area.

You can even ski at night. Distance: 500m
Slope: Maximum 27° ◎Average 15°
Level: Advanced

East Mt.

Across A Course < uncompacted snow >

A short route that provides easy access to Isola Base Station from East Mt.

It connects the middle of the East Tigne Course with Furiko swamp, and although it is short, it has a nice slope, so you can enjoy the pleasant powder spray right after the snowfall. Distance: 300m
Slope: Maximum 33°◎Average 29°
Level: Advanced

Across B course < uncompacted snow >

A non-groomed snow course with shortcut access from the Houbol course to the Isola base station.

While we were moving around, we had some powder left on the sides of the course. There is a slope, so it is recommended for advanced users. Distance: 200m
Slope: Maximum 33°◎Average 22°
Level: Advanced

Super East Course < Uncompacted snow >

As the name suggests, this is the most difficult course on East Mt.

Rusutsu's maximum slope of 40° is sure to be overhead powder after a snowfall. When there is no fresh snow, the course becomes very technical and full of bumps. Distance: 500m
Slope: Maximum 40°◎Average 32°
Level: Superlative

Mt.Isola [Isola]

Isola A Course < uncompacted snow >

The first run of the course that continues from the Isola Grand Course to Furikozawa.

In addition to the slope, the run distance of 1,000m is enough. In addition to being able to enjoy the bumps on the non-compacted snow course, there are often dry powder piles up just after the snowfall. Distance: 1000m
Slope: Maximum 27°◎Average 24°
Level: Superlative

Isola B Course < uncompacted snow >

Similar to Isola A, course 2 leading to Furikozawa.

The upper part is gentle, but the incline comes out in the middle part. The snow accumulates on the left and right sides of the course due to the wind, so you can often find petit pau. Distance: 800m
Slope: Maximum 25°◎Average 22°
Level: Advanced

Heavenly Canyon Course < uncompacted snow >

Rusutsu's famous Powder Heaven course.

Because of the creek, the snow carried by the wind tends to accumulate, and after it rains, it looks like this (photo). It takes a certain amount of physical strength and skill to seriously ski a full course. Distance: 1850m
Slope: Maximum 29°◎Average 13°
Level: Advanced

Heavenly Spirit Course < uncompacted snow >

Among Mt.Isola, there are 2 popular courses for those who like powder, along with Heavenly Canyon. Let's dive with speed on the heavenly view course with the best view. The maximum slope of 22 degrees continues for nearly 500m, and you can fully enjoy the dry powder of Rusutsu.

Distance: 550m
Slope: Maximum 22°◎Average 19°
Level: Advanced
