April 22nd: Ayana Onozuka's message for Earth Day 2021, a time to think about the global environment - To continue running in pursuit of snow and freedom

What is Earth Day?

Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated. Established by UNESCO in 1969, it's a day to reflect on the environment and express gratitude for our beautiful natural surroundings. Around the world, events are held to raise awareness of the Earth's environment. In Japan, various activities are taking place, including "The Earth Day Tokyo 2021." While

the Earth faces numerous environmental problems such as global warming, air pollution, water pollution, and deforestation, global warming is a particularly serious issue for those of us who enjoy playing or working in snowy mountains. Let's take Earth Day as an opportunity to consider what we can do to protect these precious natural snowfields from the crisis of climate change, such as devising ways to reduce CO2 emissions.

The term "climate change" is something we hear almost daily in our lives these days. This
is no exception for us mountain lovers, as evidenced by last year's record low snowfall and this year's heavy snowfall followed by an unusually rapid melt. This year, in particular, we experienced unprecedented weather patterns.

The wonderful times that snow-covered mountains and natural landscapes offer, and our ability to live supported by the power of nature, are all thanks to the Earth. And it is we humans who can protect this Earth. May this planet remain beautiful forever.
With Jeep, now and in the future.

Ayana Onozuka × Jeep

Ayana Onozuka's favorite vehicle for accessing snowy mountains is the Jeep. Its incredible off-road capabilities make it extremely popular among outdoor enthusiasts, and its spacious interior also makes it a favorite among skiers and snowboarders

Jeep has produced its first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), combining a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4xe is a new vehicle that combines Jeep's renowned off-road capabilities with environmental performance, capable of traveling 48km on 100% electric power with no emissions whatsoever. More EVs are planned for various models in the future. This can be seen as Jeep's commitment to global environmental issues, embodying the sustainability and SDGs that the times demand in a car.

There is no engine noise, so if you open the windows you can hear the sounds of nature outside

Charging the battery is intuitive and easy, and can be done at a station in town or at home, just like with a typical plug-in hybrid car

■ MISSION

"POW" was formed under this mission.
In order to protect natural fields from the climate crisis, they are engaged in various initiatives to address climate change issues, such as building alliances, raising awareness, and taking concrete actions to reduce or absorb CO2 emissions.

■ ROOTS

POW's roots date back to 2007. Jeremy Jones, a professional snowboarder based in Jackson Hole, USA, who had been recording footage on big mountains around the world, felt a sense of crisis about the significant impact that climate change was having on snowy mountains, and founded Protect Our Winters (POW) with his friends. With a mission to "empower those passionate about outdoor activities who are taking action to protect their fields and lifestyles from climate change," POW's activities, which began in the USA, have had an impact on snow communities around the world, and the POW network now spans 13 countries. The North American representative is freeskier Mike Douglas. The Japanese representative is professional snowboarder Goro Komatsu. Ayana Onozuka is one of POW's ambassadors

POW JAPAN's official video channel, "POW JAPAN CHANNEL," delivers
content that is both entertaining and educational, including cross-talks between POW ambassadors (who are also professional skiers) and environmental experts, actionable tips for everyday life, field reports on renewable energy, and snow information from various regions.
