Nearly 10 years ago, Patagonia and Gore set out to achieve an ambitious goal: to eliminate water-repellent fluorine-containing compounds, commonly known as PFCs and PFAS, from our waterproof outerwear fabrics without compromising performance. And we've finally achieved it
Traditionally, membranes have been made of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), known for its hydrophobicity and durability. However, the production process for ePTFE uses fluorine-containing compounds (PFCs and PFASs). These compounds can be released into the air or water if not handled carefully during manufacturing, and can accumulate in our bodies through air, water, and food, posing a threat to our health. Patagonia and Gore began collaborating 10 years ago to create a completely new material that eliminates these harmful substances. As a result, in 2022, they launched snowwear featuring a fluorine-free ePE (expanded polyethylene) membrane. This year, they introduced a three-layer version of the Gore-Tex ePE membrane, designed to withstand even the most extreme environments, to their alpine and snow products

Patagonia's campaign site is currently showcasing models that also use PFC-free materials
Additionally, a talk event will be held to discuss the future of outdoor wear through the 2023 Fall/Winter season models, and how to continue to approach clothing in order to enjoy outdoor sports in nature to the fullest. The guests will be Patagonia Snowboard Ambassador and international mountain guide Naoyuki Kato, and Hideaki Onuki, GORE-TEX Fabrics Sales Representative at Gore Japan LLC. The event will be held at Patagonia's Kanda location in Tokyo. Participation is free, but advance reservations are required by phone
