BLIZZARD is a long-established Austrian ski brand. While they offer a wide range of products from alpine racing to backcountry touring, in recent years they have been particularly focusing on their freeride line, and the number of athletes using their skis in the FWT (Freeride World Tour) is increasing
The development of legendary skis like "RUSTLER" and "SHEEVA" has always involved a team of engineers and riders working together, but next season, an artist will join the team, and a new all-mountain freeride series called "CANVAS" will be introduced, aimed at skiers seeking a freer and more playful riding experience
A unique expression born from the fusion of craft and art
When you think of BLIZZARD, many people might have an image of something hard, heavy, and stoic, like the "FIREBIRD" series with its triple-layered metal construction. Their craftsmanship is, in a sense, stubborn and meticulous, backed by Austrian artisan spirit. But now,Penelope Misa.
Having grown up with parents who ran a ramen and curry restaurant in Park City, Utah, she was familiar with skiing from a young age. This background is reflected in her unique style of expression
What is a monotype?
The technique she uses is called "monotype." It's a form of expression that falls between printmaking and painting, where ink is applied to an acrylic plate or glass, and paper is pressed onto it and printed only once. The fact that each piece is unique and the chance involved in the production process resonates with the feeling of skiing, where you can never make the same turn twice, and with the ever-changing nature

Three models to be offered
The CANVAS series, born from two years of research and development while actively incorporating feedback from athletes, comes in three models with waist widths of 100, 108, and 118 mm

The feeling of riding on the top seat

Before discussing the features of the skis, let's first look at her artistic sensibility. The photo shows the top and tail sections of the "CANVAS 118," but can you imagine what this graphic represents?

The design of this model is based on an abstract visual created by converting a rider's riding photograph to monochrome and then zooming in on the swirling snow. It is said to embody energy, expression, and the emotions gained from riding
Brush-like flexibility
Not only is the top sheet a reflection of the artist's sensibility, but the core material also reflects a strong commitment to quality. The brand, which insists on using a wood core whether on-piste or off-piste, boasts "TRUEBLEND WOODCORE." By optimizing the flex by dividing it into three zones, it achieves a supple and stable ride
While the thrill of cutting through the snow and pursuing speed is certainly appealing, this model allows you to enjoy free expression, using the entire mountain as your canvas. Instead of relying on brute force to turn, it gives you the feeling of drawing smooth turns like a brush with good resilience. This is a board that will draw out your creativity as you ski
▼At the test ride event in Sugadaira, Keishi Yoyama introduced it as the brand's top recommendation
At the recent SKI DIG held at Kashimayari, I was able to try out all three models of the BLIZZARD, which have undergone a bold image change, in the pleasant spring weather. The monochrome design is accented with neon-colored details

In Europe, the collection was already on pre-sale last December. If you're looking to be inspired by the artist's fresh sensibility, be sure to check it out at the early exhibitions held in various locations
