Two years after its debut, the Phaenom has evolved into the "02." While the shell's downsizing is the main focus of the improvements, significant changes have been made, including new materials and a completely redesigned liner. Everything is focused on enhancing gliding performance

Downsizing leads to a more direct and responsive feel

Phaenom, a footwear brand that debuted in 2024 as a completely new type of ski boot with two buckles, has announced its latest collection. Phaenom combines modern design, a star-studded team of riders, reliable performance, and a commitment to sustainable manufacturing

This update isn't just a simple color change that's immediately noticeable. It's a major overhaul based on feedback from around the world over the past two seasons

The biggest news is the change in last width and the resulting downsizing. The last width has been narrowed from the previous generous 102mm design to the industry standard of 100mm. This ensures ample space inside the shell while providing a performance fit that balances a high level of fit and comfort

Accordingly, the outer shell design has been completely redesigned. For example, the sole length for the 26cm model has been significantly downsized from the conventional 305mm to 295mm. This miniaturization allows the force applied when stepping down to be transmitted to the ski without any loss, and the response speed of the controls has also been dramatically improved

The materials have also evolved. The top-of-the-line Flex 130 model incorporates a new material, TPU+, which is less affected by temperature changes. This allows for consistent flex and feel from the depths of winter to early spring

Updating the liner was a major focus of this project. The "fr02" for freeride and the "fs02" for freestyle have clearly different functions to suit their respective roles. The fr liner has a flex zone on the back to increase the range of motion and enable natural ankle movement when climbing. Furthermore, it uses a highly breathable mesh material to prevent stuffiness. In contrast, the fs liner has a thicker design that prioritizes shock absorption and cushioning. It effectively suppresses the intense vibrations when landing and reduces foot fatigue. In addition, the liner uses a low-friction material for smooth foot entry

These liners feature 3mm thick self-molding foam that molds to your feet after just one day of use. The shell and liner are sold separately, allowing for customization by combining parts to suit your foot shape and style

The design philosophy has been completely revamped from the previous all-black approach. While still using black as the base color from a recycling perspective, the brand has actively incorporated eye-catching colors for in-store displays

However, the underlying design philosophy of repairing and using products for a long time remains unwavering. All parts are secured with screws, not glue or rivets, making it easy to replace damaged parts. After the product's lifespan, it is assumed that it will be separated by material and recycled

It's fair to say that Phaenom has found an answer to the difficult challenge of balancing performance and sustainability with its new boots
