The brand's iconic Freeride Shell is back. While retaining its unique curved zipper that avoids chin interference, it has been redesigned with the latest environmentally friendly materials and a modern fit
A curve that has been freed from small stresses. A redefinition of the structure after 25 years
Back in 2001, when Arc'teryx launched its "Descent Collection" line for snow activities, the prevailing design for ski wear featured a front zipper that ran straight down the center of the chest
However, this straight zipper had a structural problem: when the collar was closed, the slider would interfere with the chin, causing discomfort. Arc'teryx tackled this problem with an unconventional approach
This is the asymmetrical structure, where the zipper is positioned off-center and curved. This approach was not merely a functional solution, but also a visual symbol of Arc'teryx's design philosophy of pursuing performance in harsh mountain environments. Even now, a quarter of a century after its creation, this distinctive curved front zipper remains an iconic feature
The jacket has been completely redesigned to meet current environmental standards and the demands of skiers
The process of arranging a zipper, which is normally composed of straight lines, in a curved shape creates unnatural stress and distortion in the fabric. Therefore, it is easy to imagine that extremely delicate precision is required in the sewing and design. To address this, the latest Sidewinder zippers employ a technique in which craftsmen use their skills to create a three-dimensional cup shape to form this curve
This design not only prevents interference with the chin but also achieves a balance of operability, durability, and ease of repair. The material used is a 100-denier 3-layer fabric incorporating a thin, lightweight Gore-Tex ePE membrane. Furthermore, areas prone to abrasion when carrying a backpack, such as the shoulders, back, upper chest, and sleeves, are reinforced locally with a matching 100-denier ripstop outer fabric
The combination of extremely streamlined 1.6mm micro-seams and refined seam lines provides waterproofing, windproofing, and breathability that can withstand harsh mountain environments
In developing the new model, the product team revisited the original model and updated the design through extensive dialogue with sponsored athletes. In particular, the fit was adjusted to a more modern, relaxed fit
Furthermore, in order to address the current challenge of reducing environmental impact, recycled nylon is used for the outer fabric, and PFAS-free Gore-Tex ePE and bluesign certified materials are employed
A natural asymmetry, derived from the desire for comfort in the mountains
1. A distinctive design that prevents chafing against the chin

The front zipper is curved into a three-dimensional cup shape thanks to the craftsman's skill. Even when the collar is fully closed, the slider does not directly touch the chin, preventing zippers from interfering with each other when layering. The asymmetrical flaps maintain the collar's shape even when the zipper is slightly open, a well-thought-out design
2. Helmet-compatible hood

The storm hood features a laminated brim that maintains clear visibility even in bad weather and strong winds. The oversized hood can be evenly tightened with a drawstring, even when wearing a helmet, for a snug fit around the head. It also offers excellent freedom of movement when looking around
3. Durable ripstop fabric

The shoulder straps of the backpack, as well as areas around the shoulders and sleeves that are prone to frequent contact and wear, are mapped with 100-denier ripstop outer fabric. The structure, in which thick, high-strength threads are woven in a grid pattern against the base fabric, enhances durability and protection against localized friction, making it resistant to holes and tears
4. Cutting that assists movement around the shoulders

Featuring a three-dimensional structure and underarm gussets, this garment ensures a wide range of motion without restricting shoulder or arm movement, even when layered. The hem won't ride up during large movements like raising your arms high, making it ideal for strenuous riding
