Let's hear impressions from riders about their favorite gear that they used extensively last winter.
This time, we'll hear about the skis, boots, and bindings used by TKY Takaya Kawaguchi, who mainly operates in Nozawa Onsen and skis in various locations throughout Japan, including Rishiri Island.
Rider Profile

Takuya Kawaguchi, 40 years old
After experiencing the world level of skiing in Canada, he shifted his focus from park riding to skiing tours. He has visited over 50 countries with skis and a surfboard in hand, including a round-the-world road trip. He continues to travel to remote areas and meet indigenous peoples, driven by his curiosity.
Currently, he is organizing events to share the appeal of travel that combines backcountry skiing and surfing. He is the founder of the travel planning project ShareTavi, director and main guide at Nozawa Onsen COMPASS HOUSE, and a JMGA certified backcountry ski guide.
Kawaguchi TKY Takaya setup
Reviewing the entire setup
What kind of places and situations is this setup intended for skating in?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaThis is a setup for cool, playful adults to fully enjoy snow trips.
With backcountry skiing, you can play anywhere in the world where it snows, not just on groomed slopes. This set maximizes the possibilities of such snow trips. We believe this set will provide ample enjoyment even on a one-day backcountry tour, so please take a look!
Can you tell me why you have this setup?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaOur priority is to make the ski ultra-lightweight without compromising on glide. Many ultra-lightweight gears designed specifically for climbing sacrifice glide, which is unavoidable due to their construction. However, the setup we propose here overturns conventional wisdom. It's ultra-lightweight to make hiking, an essential part of backcountry skiing, easier, yet still provides outstanding glide satisfaction - a perfection that feels like a new era
Ski Impressions

What are your impressions of the performance and ride of these skis?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaWeighing in at a mere 1350g per ski (178cm), these skis are incredibly lightweight, yet, as expected from ARMADA, a brand synonymous with freeskiing, they offer a satisfying skiing experience and are designed for free and enjoyable control.
The rocker is perfectly balanced, allowing you to ski in powder even with a 96mm center width, and the vertically cut sidecuts allow you to adjust your turn radius and slide freely even in challenging snow conditions, offering many advantages in the unpredictable backcountry.
If you prioritize powder a bit more, or if you don't do many long hikes, the LOCATOR 104 might be a better option. For those who can afford to add the LOCATOR 112 to their LOCATOR 96, winter backcountry skiing is guaranteed to be even more enjoyable.
What else do you like about the design or special features of these skis?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaWith its simple, surfboard-like design, it looks incredibly cool when ridden by adults.
The ultra-lightweight carbon fiber sheet used provides a fantastic riding experience, while simultaneously improving durability, ensuring long-term use and making it a top-notch product from an SDG perspective. As a companion meant to be enjoyed for many years, the timeless, simple design is a welcome feature. The
recessed tail shape prevents the seal's tail clip from coming loose, another thoughtful design detail that reduces stress.
Who would you recommend these skis to?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaThis is highly recommended for playful adults
. You'll be looking forward to your weekend backcountry skiing, and when you return to town, the memories of last weekend's snowy mountains will be stuck in your head. If you're light on your feet and snow trips are your greatest passion, then this is for you.
It's a meticulously designed and excellent ski, so I could go on and on explaining its functions and structure, but putting aside the technical details, this is a ski that I would recommend to cool adults who just want to have fun like that. In particular, if you've ever tried ultralight skis in the past but regretted it because the ride felt flimsy, then this is a must-see!
Boots impressions

What are your impressions of the performance and comfort of these boots?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaThe STRIDER, a highly popular AT boot specifically designed for skiing, has finally undergone a complete redesign! Now even lighter at 1480g per shoe (size 26.5cm), hiking has become even more enjoyable. The shell last has also been narrowed to 99mm, improving the fit and securely holding the lightweight inner boot, minimizing the sacrifice in skiing performance. The hike
mode switch lever is now externally mounted, and the increased ankle range of motion makes hiking feel just like wearing trail running shoes.
What else do you like about these boots, such as their design or special features?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaThe first buckle of the lower cuff is integrated with the second buckle by a wire, a bold design feature. The ability to instantly switch to hiking mode by simply loosening the first buckle releases the entire lower cuff, including the second buckle, is incredibly fast and convenient.
Needless to say, this design also contributes to further weight reduction. The comfortable sole, made with Michelin rubber, is another welcome feature for touring skiers!
Furthermore, since it's made from recycled old boots, it contributes to reducing environmental impact!
Who do you think these boots are recommended for?
Kawaguchi TKY Yayaare highly recommended for adults who enjoy backcountry skiing.
Even if you head into the backcountry with a heavy, performance-oriented setup, it's pointless if you're exhausted by the time you reach the peak. These boots allow you to hike easily and conserve energy, while still providing an uncompromising skiing experience. They're designed to ensure you don't waste a precious day in the snowy mountains.
The UNLIMITED LT 130's flex might seem intimidating, but the LT model is the only one that uses ultra-lightweight materials, making the LT130 the absolute best choice! In fact, a 130mm size improves the hold of the ultra-lightweight shell, making it easier to ski, so please give the LT130 a try!
Binding impressions

What are your impressions of the performance and feel of this binding?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaWeighing just 390g per foot, these skis are so incredibly light you could hike to Mars in them. The toe pins provide excellent hold, so unbelievably, you can even run while wearing them (lol)
. Their lightness belies their incredible skiing performance, making them indispensable. They're also incredibly durable—they won't break even when you jump in the park. No need to weigh them every time you pack for a flight!
What else do you like about this binding, such as its design or special features?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaIt has a simple structure. It not only switches modes quickly, but it's also less likely to break because of its simplicity. It also looks sleek and super cool
Who do you think these bindings are recommended for?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaAdult skiers who have become completely hooked on backcountry skiing. Those who have found themselves increasingly taking long hikes deep into remote areas in search of snow. Those who, while everyone around them has switched to spring activities, continue to frequent the snow-covered mountains. Those who,
unable to get enough, make two more round trips to the summit. Those who, before they know it, are not just traveling by car but also taking flights on their skiing trips. Try it, you won't regret it. Skiing will transform from a winter companion into a life companion.
Where should you mount your bindings and why?
Kawaguchi TKY YayaThe skis that this binding is set to are likely to be directional and good for hiking, so it is always FACTORY RECOMMENDED
