What is the current situation in Tateyama... From the Tateyama Murodo live camera

Tateyama in November, the charm of the first slide

The amount of snow accumulated in the Tateyama mountain range, which is made up of 3,000m-class mountains, is surprisingly large.
Snow clouds rising from the Sea of Japan bring plenty of snowfall to Murododaira, creating a tourist attraction called "Yuki no Otani" where 15 to 20m of snow accumulates. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which connects Toyama and Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, is suspended from December 1st to mid-April every year due to the heavy snowfall. Therefore, the skiing period is from mid-April to late June, when the Alpine Route starts operating in the spring, and the end of November, when the snow starts to fall.

Even in spring, it sometimes snows at altitudes of 3000m, and you can enjoy powder even in April. In May, when the snow settles down, many skiers gather here as a mecca for spring skiing. When it starts snowing in November, it's difficult to find the perfect time to ski, but if the snow covers the rocks and plants, you can enjoy the finest powder snow. In a normal year, the peak season for skiing is about a week from around Labor Thanksgiving Day to the end of the day.

The snow on Tateyama in November can be said to be the best powder. The snow that falls at a high altitude of 3000m is smooth and has very little moisture. It's really light snow that flies when the wind blows. When this is firmly piled up, you can enjoy a floating feeling that does not make you feel resistance. Many slippers enter the mountain at this time of year as they want the snow to pile up firmly without being blown away. , and avalanches occur frequently. There have been many fatal avalanche accidents under the backcountry boom of the last decade.

About 20 years ago, professional skiers would come to Tateyama for photo shoots from early to mid-November. (The link below is "Tateyama Gallery in November" project, which also includes photos from that time)
