OSPREY was founded in 1974 in Santa Cruz, California, as a backpack manufacturer. Founder and designer Mike Fortenhauer was captivated by the graceful flight of the osprey, which was endangered at the time, and adopted the bird's name for the brand and logo

Mike, who majored in painting at art college, focused on backpacks as a practical item that combined his passion for mountaineering with art. Initially, he manufactured custom-made backpacks for himself and other mountaineers.
