You've seen and heard of telemark skiing, but you've never tried it. Why not? That's why a group of volunteers are holding a free telemark ski trial and test ride event (sponsored by the Japan Telemark Association) this spring

Telemark skiing originated in the Telemark region of southern Norway in the late 19th century as a way to move across snow. It is a sport that can be considered the prototype of skiing, combining the characteristics of both cross-country skiing and alpine skiing, allowing you to both walk and slide. Unlike alpine skiing, which trades stability for limited physical activity due to immobility, telemark skiing trades stability for limitless freedom on the snow, and the associated trade-offs, allowing you to experience the full force of your body. Perhaps this is the true joy of skiing

According to a telemark enthusiast our editorial team met at a test ride the other day, telemark is "fun because of the feeling of despair," "you think you've improved yesterday, but today you're a completely different person," "everything changes with a change in environment," "you can't go back to when your heels were fixed," and "the pain and the fun never end." He also said, "there's not even a moment when you can clear your mind," which led us to imagine a Zen-like experience where you can concentrate on the sensations of the moment, but it seems to be the exact opposite

Skiing has now become established as a sport that hosts world championships and World Cups, but in Japan it still seems less popular than basic skiing, which has major events such as technical competitions. This is why the "Spring Tele Festival Volunteers Group," led by Bluemoris pro staff member Shiomi, was formed. They regularly promote skiing through test rides and other events, and this trial event will be filled with their passion

On the day, active Telemark Ski World Cup competitors and Japan Telemark Ski Association certified instructors will be on hand to help first-timers with their first Telemark skiing experience, from how to put on boots to how to put on bindings, or even just one lift. Experienced skiers will also be able to test ride Bluemoris Telemark skis
Not only will you learn new equipment, but by experiencing skiing with completely different positions and loading methods, you'll also broaden your knowledge and range of motion, and your skills will undoubtedly improve. This is something that even those who have been skiing for many years should definitely give it a try. In the warm spring weather, why not free your mind and your heels and enjoy skiing in a way that transcends genres?
