Millet Typhon Warm Steep | Highly comfortable snowwear for all types of snowboarding

Millet's proprietary Dry Edge Typhon material boasts a high breathability of 50,000mm (50,000g/m²/24h). Taking advantage of this waterproof and breathable material, which allows 50L of moisture to pass through 1m² of fabric in 24 hours, nearly twice as much as regular rainwear, the Typhon Warm Steep, which will be released this winter, has been developed for skiing and snowboarding

Typhon first came out in the spring/summer 2015 model. Millet is based in Annecy, France, but the development of clothing using this material was led by Japan. The background to its development was a desire to keep people comfortable inside their clothing, even in Japan, where there are many hot and rainy mountain climbing seasons

Since then, the lineup featuring Typhon has continued to expand, and now includes the Typhon 50000, which can be used for spring and summer trekking, the Trilogy Typhon Tough, which can be used all year round, and the Typhon 50000 Warm, which is ideal for mountain climbing in autumn and winter. Finally, in 2019, the Typhon Warm Steep was born, leveraging the Typhon's performance and focusing on skiing

What is the difference between the autumn/winter "Typhon Warm" and "Typhon Warm Steep"?

The Typhon Warm first appeared on the outdoor scene in 2017. The basic construction was largely unchanged from the spring/summer model, but as it was for autumn and winter, the lining was made of brushed tricot, and the outer fabric of the early models was slightly thicker than today's.
Even before the release of the Typhon Warm Steep, many of the support riders wore this model on ski resorts and in the backcountry. The reason for this is obvious: not only is it comfortable when skiing, as it efficiently releases moisture from the garment while in motion, but its lightweight feel makes it ideal for aggressive movements. However, as it is not primarily a model for skiing, it is designed with details for mountain activities in autumn and winter.

First, let's look at the differences in the specifications between the Typhon Warm and Typhon Warm Steep

The left is the "Typhon Warm" without a powder guard. The right is the "Typhon Warm Steep" with a removable powder guard
The Typhon Warm (left) had edge guards, which were only a token extra. The Typhon Warm Steep has large edge guards made of highly durable material, and also comes with gaiters that fit over the boots. This gives it the look of skiing pants
The "Typhon Warm" pants in the back have a simple design with vertical zipper pockets on the left and right front. On the other hand, the "Typhon Warm Steep" in the front has a horizontal zipper and an additional pocket with a gusset on the front left thigh
The jacket in the foreground is the "Typhon Warm" jacket, while the one in the background is the "Typhon Warm Steep." The front pockets have been repositioned toward the center. The neck and shoulder patterns have also been changed to allow for smoother movement
The Typhon Warm Steep comes with a clear lift ticket holder that can be easily removed. This does not apply to the Typhon Warm, which is located at the back. The Typhon Warm Steep also has wider Velcro straps for tightening the sleeves, making them easier to operate and adjust

In this way, the Typhon Warm Steep is developed for skiers, incorporating many convenient features that were omitted due to priorities

For those who primarily use the backcountry, the Typhon Warm boasts high-performance waterproof and breathable material and a streamlined construction that makes it light and easy to move in, directly linked to ease of use, but this limited the range of people who could use it. Millet's shell model has a feature called insulation pairing, which allows you to adjust the inner layer of the jacket depending on the field environment, so you can use one jacket for a long season from midwinter to spring. In other words, for experienced skiers, it is an impeccable product that can be easily adapted

Encouraged by the growing popularity of shellwear made from highly waterproof and breathable materials, Millet developed the Typhon Warm Steep, a jacket based on ease of use in the backcountry, but with modifications to make it easier for skiers on the slopes

A closer look at the features of the "Typhon Warm Steep" series

The core of the Typhon Warm Steep is DryEdge Typhon, a material with a water permeability of 50,000mm (50,000g/m²/24h) and a water resistance of 20,000mm. It not only prevents moisture from entering the garment from the outside, but also actively expels steam that accumulates inside and cools the body. The outer fabric is 50 denier. While soft sewing threads are typically twisted and stiffened to make them durable, this fabric's exquisite twisting technique allows it to retain its softness while also trapping dead air. Combined with the brushed tricot lining, it provides even more warmth and comfort than the Typhon Warm

Millet developed the skiwear after listening to the opinions of many skiers, including support riders who ski in the backcountry, as well as SIA demonstrators, in order to provide convenience and comfort when skiing at a ski resort. The focus was on comfort. The fit was stress-free and the silhouette was made easy to move in, and the garments were fine-tuned through repeated improvements

At that time, particular attention was paid to the positioning of the pockets and the way they are stored, which many people cite as one of the criteria for ease of use. As many of the testers were people who gave lessons, there was a strong desire to be able to store small items in the pockets. In particular, the pants pockets were changed from a vertical zipper to a horizontal zipper, based on requests to make it less likely that items would fall out even if they were forgotten to fasten them. The chest pocket on the front of the jacket also had a diagonal zipper and was equipped with a gusset to improve storage capacity, also reflecting such feedback

Incidentally, the retractable lift pass holders initially met with mixed reactions. Many people wondered whether a visible type was necessary in an age where so many passes are passed through machines. However, in the field, in addition to putting tickets in the holders, various creative ideas were seen depending on the user, such as putting lesson schedules or ski resort maps.
This is another example of how ski resorts have learned that there are a variety of needs among users.

The powder skirt prevents snow and cold air from getting in. It's easy to remove, so you can use it any time of year by removing it when it gets warmer
Thanks to the three-dimensional cut and appropriate stretch performance, there is no feeling of tightness, especially from the back to the shoulders. Similarly, the pants do not cause any stress even when you bend and stretch your legs
The lining is made of brushed tricot, which provides a comfortable feel and warmth. The seam sealing that joins the brushed fabric is a special technique, making the areas prone to moisture penetration completely waterproof
The large pocket on the front of the jacket has a gusset and ample storage capacity
The inner compartment is just the right size to fit a smartphone, eliminating the worry of it slipping out
Underarm ventilation
Ventilation on the sides of the pants allows moisture to escape even when you're moving vigorously
For items you want to easily access, there is a large gusseted pocket on the front of the left thigh, which is easy to reach. There is also a sorting pocket inside this pocket
The large hood can be worn over a helmet. The inner cuffs keep out the cold air. The brim has a wire for easy fine adjustment

The Typhon Warm Steep is one of the must-have skis this winter, as it offers peace of mind thanks to its excellent performance even in tough environments, as well as a variety of features that make it easy to use on the ski slopes
