This topic is sure to be the center of attention in the 2023-2024 season. Four brands, K2, ATOMIC, SALOMON, and FISCHER, have released many models equipped with the BOA Fit System in the first and second buckle positions of their alpine boots. Here, we will take a look at this new technology that you should be aware of this year
What is the BOA Fit System?

The most distinctive feature of the BOA Fit System is its snug, enveloping fit. With previous buckle-type boots, the buckle would hook onto the fastener, creating a pulling sensation. This often caused pressure on the little toe, which made it difficult for the boot to fit properly, and the force tended to be dispersed
The BOA Fit System uses wire laces to tighten the boot, gradually creating a custom fit for your feet. This significantly improves comfort, something that traditional buckle-type boots simply can't offer. Research has also shown that, in terms of performance, having your heel securely seated in the boot's heel improves edge-to-edge control

The BOA Fit System was developed using the knowledge and experience gained from working on a variety of sports shoes, including snowboard boots and golf shoes, to develop a new system for alpine boots. The long-awaited unveiling of this system took more than five years
One of the distinctive features of BOA alpine boots is the laces. SS3 is a newly developed lace, made of 109 fine wires twisted together. With a diameter of 1.7 mm, it is thicker than laces used in snowboard boots. It is resistant to the edge of a ski and has a tensile strength of up to 245 kg, ensuring it can withstand the speed and force of a gliding snowboard

The dial for adjusting the fit is the "H+i1" model. Push the dial vertically and turn it to tighten one click at a time, and when putting on or taking off the boots, pull it up to release it all at once. Up to this point, it's the same as the previous BOA, but the "H+i1" can be loosened one click at a time. This allows for a precise fit
One concern is whether the BOA dial will come off in the event of a severe crash. You might be worried that it will break and you won't be able to tighten it, but rest assured. If an extreme impact is received, the dial will come off while still connected to the wire. The dial itself is secured with a claw and spring, so if you set it back in place and push it in, it will snap back into place. After that, you can use the dial to loosen or tighten the wire as before
"BOA Lifetime Warranty" allows you to replace any broken BOA parts free of charge
Another feature of the BOA Fit System is that it comes with a warranty that lasts for the life of the alpine boots. In the unlikely event that the dial or laces are damaged, you can order a free repair kit from the BOA official website and repair it yourself. If you need a part, you can also have it replaced at a retailer. (Installation fees may apply. Please check with each retailer for details.)
