What are the SDGs?・Initiatives for the SDGs-From climate change-What we can do to protect snow-

Global warming, which brings with it a variety of harmful effects, is an urgent problem that must be stopped for all of humanity, as well as for skiers and snowboarders who love snowy mountains. This major issue is one of the 17 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Let's take another look at the SDGs.

SDGs are "17 goals to be achieved by 2030"

SDGs is an abbreviation of "Sustainable Development Goals", and is a common goal of the international community called " Sustainable Development Goals " . In September 2015, it was unanimously adopted by member states at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, which was held with the participation of world leaders from over 150 countries.

It is a long-term development guideline from 2015 to 2030 that aims to realize a sustainable, diverse and inclusive society that leaves no one behind For this reason, the SDGs, which have a deadline of 2030, consist of 17 goals and 169 targets (specific goals) .

The 169 targets show these 17 goals in more concrete terms, describing what to aim for in what year and to what extent on a global basis, and how to reach the goals as concretely as possible. These 17 goals and 169 targets are said to be “integrated and indivisible” and are characterized by their interrelationship.

There is a growing movement in the snow industry to use the framework and movement of the SDGs to protect the snow of the future in order to realize a sustainable world where great snow sports can continue. So how does it relate to the SDGs?

Goal (13) of the SDGs, “Take concrete measures against climate change”, is to take “concrete measures against climate change” due to global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions, and to stop global warming even a little. is the goal. "If it doesn't snow so much, won't we be able to enjoy snowy mountains like we do now?"

Climate change will directly affect how snow falls

Of course, that's not all. The goals of the SDGs apply in various ways depending on the role and position in society.

Taking the snow industry as an example, it would be possible to think of initiatives for the SDGs in the roles of "snow resorts," "product manufacturers," "individual users (sliders)," and "media."

For example, switching to renewable energy for lifts, snow machines, snow groomers, etc. at resorts, local production for local consumption at restaurants, reducing food loss, clothing using recycled materials, wax that does not use fluorine, and gear repair. , switching to EV vehicles and eco-driving.

SDGs initiatives that create synergies

The ideal of the SDGs is that the 17 goals (Goals) are mutually related to create synergies. For example, the spread of renewable energy, which is considered to be the most effective way to reduce CO2 (Goal 7), is not only directly linked to climate change countermeasures (Goal 13), but also contributes to people's health by reducing air pollution. (Goal 3), and have a positive impact on building sustainable cities (Goal 11).

Shiga Kogen Beer

For example, local beer made in snow country. The number of local beers named after resorts, such as “Niseko Beer,” “Arai Beer,” and “Shiga Kogen Beer,” has also increased. Beer is brewed by the people who live in the area, using underground water that springs up from the ski resort and the surrounding mountains. While valuing the richness of the mountains, we will create new jobs in resort areas and revitalize local industries. It can be said that our commitment to manufacturing and job satisfaction can be said to be an SDGs initiative that produces synergistic effects.

In fact, each action creates a synergistic effect, and various activities are being carried out to bring about change. STEEP wants to disseminate information from the role of media.

For example:
