'24-25 What are the "freeride models" recommended by pro shops?

The staff at pro shops have a keen eye for quality skis, having a cross-sectional view of various brands, test-riding them on the snow themselves, and gathering feedback from users. So, we asked them to recommend some skis from the new 2024-2025 freeride ski models. If you're interested in multiple new models but can't decide on one, or if you're looking for a ski that's highly rated by pros, this is the place to go!

These skis are primarily for the slopes, but also work well in the park and side country. With a shape and flex that's just right for skiing on the slopes and in the park, I think they're a great choice for a variety of skiing styles and skiers! These are freeride skis designed with backcountry use in mind. They are lightweight, making them easy to use for backcountry activities like hiking, and they perform well in any conditions—meeting two key requirements.

These two requirements seem to be the current trend in freeride skis. In fact, I learned backcountry skiing with the original "BACKLAND100," and used them extensively for over five years, even switching to telemark skis along the way!

The BACKLAND109 was released for the 2024-2025 season. Compared to last year's BACKLAND107 model, the waist is slightly wider, the top is slightly thinner, and the 3D structure provides increased buoyancy. While the weight is not much different from the 107, it feels lighter, perhaps due to its good balance, and is very easy to handle, making it extremely maneuverable in deep snow

Even freeskiers who usually ski loosely should consider owning at least one pair of more traditional, challenging skis. These skis are difficult to handle if your riding position is wrong, but with practice, you'll naturally improve your skiing skills. Then, when you switch to different skis later, you'll be able to further unlock their potential.

For advanced skiers with good positioning and a certain level of power, these are top-notch all-mountain skis for high-speed runs. They're great on well-groomed slopes and powder, of course, but I highly recommend trying them on the rougher, more rugged runs of the afternoon to experience a higher level of skiing.

Regarding length, I'd recommend 180cm for men if possible, but depending on your physique and skill level, you might need to consider downsizing for safety reasons.

The 1mm camber provides solid edging on the slopes, and the 111mm waist width provides buoyancy in powder. The twin tip shortens the effective edge, so even if you choose a longer length, it won't be too long. Whether you're cruising the slopes, tackling the side country, or playing around with the terrain, these skis are sure to be a hit with many skiers!

Unfortunately, we couldn't feature CANDIDE SKIS in this article for the 23-24 season because it was before their launch. However, they received excellent reviews from users at test rides, and we had many reservations for them at our shop. This is the original brand of the renowned super freeskiier, Candede Thovex.

It's similar to, yet distinct from, the FACTION CT series, which Candide had been involved in developing for many years. Candede's riding proves its high potential. That being said, it's not an overly high-end or difficult-to-handle ski; its versatility allows anyone to enjoy a satisfying ride! The "RESORT 101" is a truly complete all-around freeski, suitable for everything from the park to light powder!

DPS, which took a break from domestic sales last season, is making a comeback for '24-25. In addition to the "KAIZEN" launched in '23-24, the "CARBON WAILER 107" revives the traditional (legendary) Wailer shape for the '24-25 season!

Furthermore, it makes extensive use of bio-based materials and adhesives. Despite being a next-generation ski, the ride feels like a classic, true all-mountain ski. This ski is incredibly fun! It comes in three waist sizes: 90/100/107. Choose according to your needs and preferences!

ELAN |RIPSTICK 102 BLACK EDITION

◆Official Website:https://www.elanjapan.co.jp/

The "RIPSTICK BLACK EDITION" is a special edition ski that uses more carbon in the RIPSTICK series, which is known for its wide range of performance on snow conditions, adding aggression and performance to its adaptability.
The mountain environment is greatly influenced by external factors, and snow conditions vary greatly. There are various conditions, such as easy snow and difficult snow. The RIPSTICK series is characterized by its ability to handle any situation without being affected by the characteristics of the skis, and its greatest advantage is its "wide range of performance."

One of the features of the "RIPSTICK BLACK EDITION" is that it uses more carbon material than the standard model, but it has almost none of the sharpness and chatter that is typical of carbon. To put it extremely, it is a "carbon ski that feels like a metal ski." This expression seems to fit perfectly.

There are not many skis that can make this feeling possible. Regarding compatibility with bindings, both tech-type and frame-type bindings work fine, but since these skis are incredibly smooth on groomed slopes, a heel piece with a welt-retaining design would be a better match.

This ski is lightweight and nimble, yet offers a satisfying skiing experience. It also allows for enjoyable terrain play. While categorized as a backcountry ski in the manufacturer's catalog, it performs well in a variety of situations, from groomed slopes to sidecountry. It offers stability from low to high speeds, is easy to handle, and is a ski that will satisfy skiers of all skill levels. It pairs

well with both touring boots and bindings, and is also suitable for skiing-focused setups. The question might be whether to go for the higher volume "La Machine 5," but ultimately, think about your favorite courses and faces and make your decision based on that.

These skis are lightweight and flexible, making them easy to handle and requiring virtually no effort to operate. They offer excellent control for carving and sliding, and their moderate width allows them to handle a variety of conditions.

As a modern standard for freeskiing, I think they're perfect for families who ski a few times a year or for recreational skiers who want to enjoy themselves while exploring the various courses on the slopes. Their relatively affordable price is also a major draw. If you're a core skier and know someone who wants to start skiing, I'd definitely recommend these skis.

This is the lightest freeride model among the LINE SKIs. Not only is it light, but its excellent gliding performance is one of its attractions. There are many lightweight skis, but skis that are designed specifically for lightweight skiing can have some uncertainties when it comes to gliding. The VISION is lightweight while maintaining high gliding performance, making it ideal for both the slopes and the backcountry, where a variety of snow conditions are expected. The twin tip design also makes it suitable for park riding. The sidecut has been completely redesigned for the 2024-2025 season, making it a noteworthy new model

This ski manufacturer started as a garage brand, but their current products have evolved into highly precise products. This season's recommended new model from RMU is the PROFESSOR111. It's a very fun ski in the trendy BC freestyle genre. While it's primarily designed for powder, the twin-tip-like top and tail rocker shape makes it easy to maneuver in any snow type, and while it provides solid skiing, it's also versatile enough to be used for tricks and jumps. While this ski may not be widely available in Japan, its ride quality is remarkably smooth and refined. The flex and torque are neither too weak nor too strong, making it a ski suitable for a wide range of users. The ride

quality can be best described as "mild," and it's a ski I'd recommend to anyone except those seeking a ski with a more pronounced, responsive feel. It should also pair well with both tech and frame-type bindings.
